directable light is as natural to us today as steerable cars. but that wasn’t always the case: In 1919 engineer curt fischer, was dissatisfied with the working conditions in his own factory: a single ceiling light illuminates the room – but a worker at a machine casts a shadow on his own work area. so fischer experimented and just a year later his factory specialised entirely in the manufacture of a new type of multi-adjustable lighting – under the brand name ‘midgard’.

the “scissor” mechanism allows the light to be moved to almost any position at a 180-degree angle. the paraboloid luminaire head ensures the light beams are emitted parallel to the front, thus creating less dazzling scattered light. this functionality was certainly one of the reasons why the midgard articulated luminaires were used in the metal workshop of the weimar bauhaus a few years later – and walter gropius also used them in his own master house in dessau.

three medium sized wall mounted lights by midgard, an early version of ‘model 110’, with a length of 116 cm in total. lampheads polished aluminum, bases metal in silver hammer finish paint. the lamps were lovingly restored in our lamp workshop, keeping the patina.
